Buyer Guidelines
Practical steps to buy second-hand items in Abuja with confidence. You deal directly with the seller, so these checks protect you.
Inspect before you pay
Always see the item in person before paying. Test electronics and appliances where possible: switch them on, check screens, buttons, ports, batteries and cooling. Confirm the condition (Neatly Used, Fairly Used, Used or Needs Repair — see the Product Condition Guide) and any disclosed faults match the listing photos and description.
Ask about defects
Ask the seller directly about known faults, repairs, missing parts and accessories. A good seller will answer honestly. Walk away if answers are vague or change.
Agree the price before travelling
Negotiate and agree the price on WhatsApp or by phone before you go to inspect, so there are no surprises on arrival.
Meet somewhere safe
Choose a busy public place during daylight, such as a shopping plaza or a well-known landmark. Bring a friend for valuable items and tell someone where you are going.
Be careful with deposits
Avoid paying deposits or 'reservation fees' to sellers you have not met or verified. Fraudsters often ask for a small deposit and disappear.
Check identity and ownership where appropriate
For phones, laptops, vehicles and other valuable items, ask to see receipts, boxes with matching serial or IMEI numbers, or ownership papers. Be cautious with prices that seem far too low.
Protect your banking information
Never share your PIN, OTP, card details, BVN or online banking passwords with anyone. Declutter Abuja will never ask for them.
Report anything suspicious
Use the 'Report this Listing' button on any item page. You do not need an account, and you will receive a reference number.
